This week is one of South Africa's favourite treats.Koeksisters are almost like a baklava but with a doughnut texture made with yummy sugar syrup & not honey.
These lovely treats are found everywhere in South Africa.
You can get different types of koeksisters but I prefer the old fashion one. People have started putting out recipes where the koeksisters are now with different syrup flavours like rooibos thee, cinnamon etc. Also people have become lazy and they don't plait their koeksister anymore but just give it a twist or they make little balls with them. I prefer the old fashioned plaited koeksister as it just gives it a beautiful finish.

My recipe was given to me by my mother in law. The original recipe is really a long process where you have to make your syrup the night before & refrigerate it for the next day. The syrup must be ice cold before you can use it. My syrup can be used immediately which is such a bonus. No more waiting for ice cold syrup.
If you are a sweet tooth then you have to try this delicious sweet treat.
Koeksisters is a must in any home!
